The Northumberland Football League is a large grassroots competition serving children, young people and adults in Northumberland and the wider North East. Its programme spans mini-soccer, youth football and adult competition, with matches played across the weekend.
The league’s official structure includes Saturday Youth, Sunday Youth, Girls Youth and Mini Soccer competitions. It also provides separate under-21 and women’s leagues. This breadth means that the name covers a family of competitions rather than a single division or age group.
For families entering organised football, the Mini Soccer and youth sections provide age-group competition, while the dedicated girls’ league creates a distinct route for girls’ teams. Saturday and Sunday youth sections give clubs more than one weekend option, depending on the age group and competition entered.
The under-21 league extends the structure beyond junior football, and the women’s competition sits alongside the youth programme. League and cup information is published through FA Full-Time, where players, parents and club officials can choose an age group, division or cup competition.
The league describes itself as a pathway through which a number of notable North East players developed. Its official history names England internationals Peter Beardsley, Chris Waddle and Alan Shearer among former participants, alongside later professionals including Shola and Sammy Ameobi, Adam Armstrong, Jamie Sterry, Sean Longstaff and Matty Longstaff.
That list is a distinctive part of the league’s story, linking its grassroots competitions with players who went on to appear at professional and international level.
Safeguarding is given a dedicated place within the league’s public information. Its welfare guidance directs concerns through club welfare officers and the league welfare team, and it also covers the use of websites, messaging and social media in youth football.
The league uses central venues as part of its operation and states a zero-tolerance policy towards abuse, threats or violence aimed at volunteers, referees, players, coaches and spectators at those venues.
Visit the official Northumberland Football League website for league news, welfare guidance, central-venue information and competition rules. Current fixtures, results, tables and cup information are available on FA Full-Time.
