History

The Pope & Smith's Sunday Football League was founded in 1962 by two local businessmen, Ron Pope and Bill Smith. The league started with just 8 teams, but it has grown steadily over the years and now has over 50 teams. The league has been affiliated to the Essex County Football Association since 1963.

Structure

The Pope & Smith's Sunday Football League consists of 5 divisions: Premier Division, John Pitts Senior Division, Division One, Division Two, and Division Three. The top 2 teams from each division are promoted at the end of the season, while the bottom 2 teams are relegated.

The league also has a number of cup competitions, including the Coward Cup, Gillott Trophy, Prem. League Cup, Div.1 League Cup, Div.2 League Cup, Div.3 League Cup, Div.4 League Cup, Div.5 League Cup, Inter-League Plate, Premier Cup, County Cup, County Trophy, FA Cup, and David Marshall.
