The league started with just 8 teams, but it has grown steadily over the years and now has over 50 teams. The league has been affiliated to the Essex County Football Association since 1963.
The Pope & Smith's Sunday Football League consists of 5 divisions: Premier Division, John Pitts Senior Division, Division One, Division Two, and Division Three. The top 2 teams from each division are promoted at the end of the season, while the bottom 2 teams are relegated.
