The DSL was founded in 1923 by a group of football enthusiasts in Sligo. The first season of the league consisted of just four teams, but it has since grown to become one of the largest amateur football leagues in Ireland.
The DSL has played a major role in the development of football in County Sligo and County Leitrim. Many of the players who have gone on to represent Ireland at international level have played their underage football in the league.
