The NCSA was founded in 1973 by a group of soccer enthusiasts in northern New Jersey. The league began with just a few clubs, but it has grown steadily over the years. In 2009, the NCSA became a member of US Club Soccer, the national governing body for amateur soccer in the United States.

The NCSA has a long history of producing talented players. Several NCSA alumni have gone on to play professional soccer, including Tim Howard, DaMarcus Beasley, and Heather Mitts.
