Read more →League One is the third tier of the English football league system, below the Premier League and the Championship. It is also known as Sky Bet League One for sponsorship purposes.
The league consists of 24 teams, each of which plays each other twice, once at home and once away. The top two teams at the end of the season are promoted to the Championship, while the bottom four teams are relegated to League Two.
League One was formed in 2004, when the Football League was restructured. It replaced the old Third Division, which had been the third tier of English football since 1920.
