The East London Sunday League was founded in 1921 by a group of footballers who wanted to play competitive football on Sundays. The league initially had just four teams, but it grew rapidly in the following years. By the 1930s, the ELSL had over 50 teams competing in a variety of divisions.
The ELSL continued to grow in the post-war years, and by the 1960s it was one of the largest Sunday leagues in the country. The league has also been home to some notable players over the years, including former England internationals Geoff Hurst and Bobby Moore.
