The BDFL is currently divided into five divisions: Premier, First Division, Second Division, Third Division, and Fourth Division.
The BDFL was founded in 1918 during the First World War, when the Irish League was suspended. The inaugural season was won by Belfast Celtic. The BDFL continued to operate during the Second World War, although the number of teams participating decreased significantly.
The BDFL has grown in popularity in recent years. In the 2022-23 season, there are over 100 teams competing in the league. The current champions are Glentoran Reserves.
