About Crewe Nomads

Crewe Nomads is a well estalished football club based in South Cheshire. Last season we celebrated our 60th anniversary. In those 60 years we have played football all over the North West of England, ventured south as far as Bromsgrove and even been on raiding missions to Scotland and Wales. We try to play the game in the right spirit, though like any other footballing side at any level of the game, we like to be competitive. We are not a true Vets team, but have a wide age span of players from 16 to 59. In recent years we have, on many occasions, been a true lads and dads team with the children of some of the older players taking to the pitch with their fathers. On one occasion in 2006 we actually had 5 father/son combinations on the pitch at the same time. Our philosophy has always been to give everyone that turns up to play for us as much time on the pitch as possible and certainly look to give all players at least half a game. When we get 23 players to turn up then it may be a problem to adhere to this principle, but until then it is our main game plan. As the name Nomads suggests, we have had numerous homes in our 60 year history - from Wilaston Whitestar to the Barony passing through Wrenbury, The Georges, Crewe LMR club and Reaseheath College to name a few. There have been plenty of watering holes visited on the way too - far too numerous to mention. Each season we try to start to count them, but when our resident accountant runs out of fingers and toes, we give up for another season. From the start of the 2009/2010 season after our home games we retire to the Leopard in Nantwich, which is a stones throw from our home pitch at the Barony on Barony Road Nantwich. There have been a number of leading lights in our history, but the main people to mention are George Davies (who started the team back in 1948 and is still organising our fixtures today) and Les Ashcroft. Les was associated with the team for over 40 years. Unfortunately, after the high of celebrating our 60th anniversary in October 08, the event and our season was overshadowed by the death of Les in in February this year.
