About Boots Wednesday

Boots Wednesday Football Club was founded by Jesse Boots in 1874 when the squad for his popular Powerleague team ('Boots Manuva') became too large. After one of the star players of that era (Toby Anstis) lacerated his face on a pitchfork, the home colours of Fire Engine Red with Scarlet Red were adopted, in honour of his appearance on that fateful day. They remain the home colours to this very day.</p> The modern era saw Dan Wallace take up managerial duties in 2006, leading the club to two cup quarter finals and promotion to EMPAL Division 2 in his first season in charge, finishing 4th in the league. After Wallace stepped down in 2007, Phil Gandy took over responsibility, but unfortunately the team suffered from a depleted squad and superior opposition, resulting in their immediate relegation back to Division 3.</p> The 2008 season saw renowned Trent lecturer Tom Spencer become El Presidente for the majority of the season, finding some early season form and a growing, young squad that stabilised the team to finish in a mid-table position. Simon Hirst took over in March 2009 to see out the season, and continued as manager in 2009/10 to steer to the team to a deserved promotion place in May 2010 (finishing fourth).</p> Tom Spencer returned as Manager in 2011/12 and saw the team finish ninth in Division Two, before Pete Allaway also guided Wednesday to ninth in 2012/13, starting the season with a threadbare team but ending with a large and significantly more youthful-looking squad!</p> Ironically, Boots have never, in their entire history, despite tangible evidence that completely disproves this fact, played a game on a Wednesday.</p>
