On the morning of 5 April 2026, Easter Sunday, The Fountain FC travelled to Winlaton Vulcan RFC to face Swalwell Highlander Magpies First in a crucial cup away tie, kicking off promptly at 10:30am.

The Fountain FC lined up in a 4-1-2-3 formation, aiming to balance defensive solidity with attacking flair. Andy Gowland finally returned to his place between the sticks as goalkeeper, providing the last line of defence. The back four consisted of Brandon Fitzgerald at right back, captain Lewis Sullivan and Jamie Tincknell as the central defensive pairing, and Nathan Sterling operating on the left flank. Ian Johnstone was deployed as the holding central midfielder, tasked with shielding the defence and recycling possession. Ahead of him, Joe Currie occupied the right attacking midfield role, with Lewis Currie on the left, both expected to supply creativity and width. The front three featured Rowan Latimer on the right wing, Favour Ekomemen leading the line as striker, and Ben Walton on the left forward position, all charged with stretching the opposition and converting chances. On the bench were Dylan Saleh, Ant Sands, and Dan Cave, ready to make tactical impacts as the game unfolded.

The match began on a windy hill at Winlaton, with the Fountain playing uphill for the first half, coming close to conceding early on as a pass back to Gowland bobbled under the keepers feet and barrelled straight for goal, but was swiftly cleared from his lines by the keeper for a corner. The next chance would arise for the homeside when a corner kick was swung in and cleared, not before being struck cleanly and crashing off the crossbar and heading back into play.

However, the match truly burst into life with an early moment of drama when Jamie Tincknell stepped up to convert a penalty in the 20th minute, calmly dispatching the ball with his right foot to give The Fountain FC the lead. This early breakthrough set the tone for a confident performance. As the first half progressed, Tincknell continued to influence proceedings, delivering a precise free kick that found Favour Ekomemen, who rose highest to head home in the 35th minute, doubling the visitors’ advantage. The half closed with The Fountain FC firmly in control at 2-0.

At the interval, the team looked well-drilled and cohesive, with the defensive unit holding firm and the midfield trio dictating the tempo. The attacking trio had already demonstrated their threat, combining well to create clear openings. Especially between Ekomemen and Latimer, who were practically dancing around the defence today in a majestic showing from the pair.

The second half saw The Fountain FC make their first tactical substitution in the 55th minute, with Dylan Saleh replacing Ben Walton to inject fresh energy on the left forward position. Shortly after, at the hour mark, Ant Sands came on for Brandon Fitzgerald, signalling a shift in defensive personnel on the right flank. These changes paid dividends ten minutes later when Saleh capitalised on a cross from Rowan Latimer, slotting home a close-range finish with his right foot in the 65th minute, extending the lead to 3-0.

The Fountain FC continued to press forward, and in the 75th minute, Joe Currie struck a superb goal from outside the box, expertly finishing after a clever back-heel assist from Favour Ekomemen. This goal showcased the attacking midfield’s creativity and precision, putting The Fountain FC 4-0 ahead. Shortly after, in the 77th minute, Dan Cave replaced Ekomemen, maintaining the team’s attacking impetus.

Despite the commanding lead, Swalwell Highlander Magpies First fought back with determination. They pulled a goal back in the 80th minute through a frantic goalmouth scramble, capitalising on a moment of defensive hesitation. The visitors’ discipline was tested further when Joe Currie received a yellow card for unsporting behaviour in the 82nd minute. The Highlanders then earned a penalty of their own, which they converted in the 85th minute, narrowing the deficit to 4-2 and injecting late tension into the contest.

However, The Fountain FC’s defensive resilience and game management saw them safely through to the final whistle, securing a memorable cup victory on the road. The referee’s performance was notably strong, maintaining control and fairness throughout the intense encounter.

Jamie Tincknell was named man of the match for his commanding presence at the back, his crucial penalty, and his pivotal assist for the opening goals. His composure was instrumental in The Fountain FC’s success on the day, but the award could have gone to anyone this day, as everyone played out of their skins, as the Fountain shook off the cup defeat of last week and arose once again on Easter Sunday.
