Silver City welcomed Cobalt City to Silverstone on 4 January 2026 for a high-octane 9-a-side cup clash, kicking off at 10:40am under the watchful eye of referee Dave Lee. The home side delivered a commanding performance, running out 6-1 winners in front of a staggering crowd of 131,800 spectators.
Silver City lined up in a 3-2-3 formation, deploying three defenders, two central midfielders, and three forwards. Johnie Gray took his place between the sticks as goalkeeper, shielded by a defensive trio of Jay Black at right defender, Tommy Shash centrally, and Oliver Tomber on the left. The midfield pivot consisted of Jace Smile and Rahul Smill, tasked with both defensive duties and linking play forward. Up front, the attacking trio featured Jason Champion on the right, Jack Fellows leading as striker, and Joe Broad on the left, expected to stretch the opposition and create chances. Luca Up was named among the substitutes.
The match began with Silver City asserting early pressure. At 8 minutes, Jason Champion tested the Cobalt City defence with a wide effort that narrowly missed the target. The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Jack Fellows capitalised on a defensive error outside the box, firing a precise right-footed shot to open the scoring and set the tone for the hosts.
Silver City continued to press, with Joe Broad attempting a shot at 23 minutes that sailed over the bar. The visitors struggled to contain the home side’s fluid attacking play. At 30 minutes, Jason Champion unleashed a spectacular long-range screamer with his left foot, expertly assisted by a short pass from Jace Smile, doubling Silver City’s advantage and electrifying the crowd.
Rahul Smill came close to adding to the tally at 37 minutes, but his effort was well saved by the opposition goalkeeper. From the resulting corner, Silver City extended their lead through Oliver Tomber, who rose highest to head home a brilliant set-piece delivered by Jason Champion, showcasing the team’s aerial threat.
The first half concluded with Silver City firmly in control at 3-0.
Early in the second half, Silver City were forced into a substitution as Joe Broad limped off injured in the 48th minute, replaced by Luca Up. The change did little to slow the hosts’ momentum.
At 68 minutes, Jason Champion scored again, this time with a stunning right-footed strike directly from a corner kick, a rare and remarkable feat that left the Cobalt City goalkeeper rooted to the spot.
The closing stages saw Rahul Smill add a stylish solo goal in the 90th minute, expertly set up by substitute Luca Up’s short pass. After a late a late parry from Johnie Gray , the visitors managed a consolation goal from the rebound finishing it off with a close-range tap-in.
Silver City were not finished, however. In stoppage time at 97 minutes, Jason Champion completed his hat-trick with a precise right-footed direct free-kick from outside the box, further emphasising his dominance throughout the match.
Jack Fellows came agonisingly close to adding a seventh goal at 99 minutes, his effort crashing against the crossbar.
Jason Champion’s outstanding display, featuring three goals including a spectacular screamer, a direct corner strike, and a free-kick, earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match accolade.
Silver City’s comprehensive 6-1 victory over Cobalt City at Silverstone was a masterclass in attacking football, with their 3-2-3 formation perfectly executed by a cohesive unit that combined defensive solidity with relentless forward thrusts.
