Mathare United Women FC welcomed MTG United to the MYSA Headquarters on 14 December 2025 for a 10:00am league fixture that ended in a resounding 6-0 victory for the home side. The match was played over the standard 90 minutes plus injury time.
Mathare United Women FC lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation, designed to provide defensive solidity while maintaining attacking options through the midfield and forward lines. Valentine Khwaka took her place in goal, protected by a back four consisting of Veronica Nyambura at right back, Marline Atieno and Nestley Nanjala as central defenders, and Rachael Adhiambo on the left. The midfield featured Mitshel Waithera on the right wing, Sharon Juma and Faith Atieno centrally, and Gladwell Musungu on the left. Jerrine Adhiambo operated just behind the lone striker Sylvia Otieno, who was expected to lead the line and capitalise on chances created by the midfield and wide players.
The match burst into life early as Mathare United Women FC took control. Within four minutes, Veronica Nyambura delivered a precise cross from the right flank, which Sylvia Otieno met with a powerful header to open the scoring. Just four minutes later, Nyambura again played a pivotal role, this time sending a long pass forward that Otieno expertly lobbed over the MTG United goalkeeper from outside the box with her right foot, doubling the lead.
Sylvia Otieno’s dominance continued in the 17th minute when she volleyed a long pass from central defender Nestley Nanjala from outside the box, again with her right foot, to complete a remarkable first-half hat-trick. The home side’s attacking momentum was relentless, and two minutes later Otieno turned provider, flicking the ball to Mitshel Waithera who unleashed a long-range strike with her right foot that found the back of the net, making it 4-0.
MTG United struggled to respond as Mathare United Women FC controlled the tempo. At the 26th minute, Waithera tested the opposition goalkeeper again, but this time her effort was saved. The home side’s confidence was evident, though a missed opportunity came in the 34th minute when Jerrine Adhiambo’s penalty struck the post, denying Mathare a fifth goal before the break.
The first half concluded with Mathare United Women FC firmly in command at 4-0. At half-time, tactical changes were made with Beverlyne Awuor replacing Faith Atieno, Iddah Adhiambo coming on for Mitshel Waithera, and Adah Okunyo substituting the prolific Sylvia Otieno, all at the start of the second half.
Early in the second period, goalkeeper Valentine Khwaka made a full-stretch save at the 49th minute to keep the clean sheet intact. The match remained one-sided, but discipline issues arose when substitute Adah Okunyo received a yellow card for a bad tackle in the 69th minute. Shortly after, further tactical substitutions saw Seline Achieng replace Gladwell Musungu and Brenda Atieno come on for Veronica Nyambura at the 70th minute mark.
Brenda Atieno made an immediate impact, forcing a save from the MTG United goalkeeper in the 74th minute. However, the game took a dramatic turn when Adah Okunyo was shown a second yellow card in the 78th minute, resulting in her dismissal and reducing Mathare United Women FC to ten players.
Despite being a player down, Mathare United Women FC continued to press forward. In the 87th minute, Seline Achieng capitalised on a corner delivered by Brenda Atieno, slotting home a close-range finish to extend the lead to 5-0. The scoring was completed deep into injury time at 91 minutes when Iddah Adhiambo struck a long-range effort with her right foot, assisted by Brenda Atieno’s long pass, to seal a comprehensive 6-0 victory.
Sylvia Otieno’s outstanding performance, highlighted by her first-half hat-trick and assist, earned her the player of the match accolade. Mathare United Women FC’s tactical discipline, attacking prowess, and defensive resilience were on full display as they dismantled MTG United in front of their home crowd.
