Mathare United Women FC welcomed MTG United to the MYSA Headquarters on 1 February 2025 for a league encounter that saw the home side secure a convincing 2-0 victory. With a kick-off time set for 1:00pm, the match unfolded in front of a modest crowd of 150 supporters, who witnessed a display of skill and determination from the Mathare United Women.
Mathare United lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation, which allowed for a solid defensive structure while enabling quick transitions into attack. Olive Otwaro took her place in goal, shielded by a back four consisting of Dora Achieng on the right, Marline Atieno on the left, with Brenda Atieno and Clare Meris forming the central defensive partnership. In midfield, Veronica Nyambura and Iddah Adhiambo occupied the flanks, while Seline Achieng and Beverlyne Awuor controlled the central areas. Newell Abassy played just behind the lone striker, Jerrine Adhiambo, who was tasked with leading the line and finishing off the chances created.
The opening goal came in the 17th minute, when Brenda Atieno showcased her individual brilliance by scoring a stunning solo goal from outside the box. Her strike set the tone for Mathare United, who looked to dominate possession and create further opportunities.
As the first half progressed, Mathare continued to press forward, but it was not until the 37th minute that a tactical substitution was made. Newell Abassy was replaced by Immaculate Awuor, a change aimed at bolstering the midfield as the team sought to maintain their advantage heading into the break.
The first half concluded with Mathare United leading 1-0, and they returned for the second half with the same intensity. However, the match took a turn in the 59th minute when Judith Atieno came on for Iddah Adhiambo, further strengthening the attacking options for the home side.
In the 64th minute, Clare Meris received a yellow card for a bad tackle, a moment that briefly disrupted Mathare's momentum. Nevertheless, the team remained focused and continued to push for a second goal.
That goal arrived in the 73rd minute, courtesy of Judith Atieno, who capitalised on a long pass from Beverlyne Awuor. Atieno unleashed a powerful long-range strike that found the back of the net, doubling Mathare United's lead and effectively sealing the match.
As the game approached its final stages, Faith Atieno replaced Veronica Nyambura in the 81st minute, a tactical move to maintain the team's energy and control in midfield.
The referee brought the match to a close with Mathare United emerging victorious with a 2-0 scoreline. Judith Atieno's performance, capped with a goal, earned her the accolade of Player of the Match, highlighting her significant contribution to the team's success. The victory not only boosts Mathare United's confidence but also solidifies their position in the league as they continue their campaign with determination and flair.
