Mathare United Women FC faced off against Makolanders FC in a gripping league match at the Calvary Grounds in Nairobi on 3rd November 2024. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with both teams showcasing their determination and skill throughout the contest.
Mathare United lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, designed to provide a solid defensive base while allowing for quick transitions to attack. Mellany Achieng took her place in goal, shielded by a back four consisting of Faria Ngadira on the right, Brenda Atieno and Elizabeth Anyango in central defence, and Phanice Odari on the left. The midfield was anchored by Marline Atieno and Seline Achieng in central roles, with Faith Atieno and Beverlyne Awuor operating on the right and left flanks, respectively. Up front, Iddah Adhiambo and Jerrine Adhiambo were tasked with leading the line and converting chances into goals.
The first half saw both teams probing for weaknesses, but it was Mathare United who faced a setback when Elizabeth Anyango received a yellow card for a bad tackle in the 38th minute. This incident highlighted the physical nature of the match, as both sides battled for control in the midfield.
As the second half commenced, it was Makolanders FC who struck first, taking the lead in the 51st minute. This early goal put Mathare United under pressure, forcing them to respond quickly to avoid slipping further behind.
However, the response came swiftly as Jerrine Adhiambo equalised for Mathare United just six minutes later, in the 57th minute. A brilliant back heel assist from Faith Atieno set up Jerrine, who finished from close range with her right foot, sending the travelling fans into raptures. The goal reinvigorated Mathare United, who began to assert themselves in the match.
In the 72nd minute, a tactical substitution saw Faith Atieno make way for Veronica Nyambura, as Mathare United looked to maintain momentum and push for a winning goal. The introduction of Nyambura added fresh energy to the midfield, but despite several attempts, neither side could find the decisive goal.
As the match drew to a close, both teams displayed resilience and determination, with Iddah Adhiambo earning accolades for her performance, being named Player of the Match. The final whistle confirmed a hard-fought draw, leaving both teams with a point to reflect on as they continue their league campaigns.
