Home cup match
Today we welcomed Solihull Moors from division 3 for our Open Cup first round match, looking to bounce back from last weeks difficult morning.
I decided to shuffle the pack slightly, knowing this would be a tough game, and didn’t want another result like last week as it can be quite demoralising for the lads.
Hampton started with fire in their bellies, tackles being won and defending as a team. Moors did sneak through on a few occasions but big Harrison kept them out every time and Moors were becoming frustrated. Rushy & Omar were also managing to break through, but unfortunately their keeper was equal to the shots or we missed the target.
A very even first half but an excellent showing from the Reds, all to play for in the 2nd half.
HT 0-0.
Much of the same in the second half, the lads scrapping for everything and really putting a great shift in across the board.
Chances would come for both sides but both keepers equal to them, with Fin going close and Kielan with a good header also going close.
Then came the turning point, the Moors striker, who had been claiming for a penalty on several occasions, finally managed to get the ref to agree and a penalty was awarded. From where I was standing it was very soft, the striker throwing himself over. Considering the ref was still in the other half of the pitch, his view also wasn’t clear so it’s a shame he gave that in such a close match. Moors slotted it away, 0-1.
I did worry at this point because Hampton’s resistance had been broken and their heads dropped a little, but to be fair to the boys they battled on, playing with pride.
Unfortunately Moors got another break when a cross bounced off Ollie into the empty net, talk about fortunate. 0-2.
That was very late in the game and was cruel on the lads but it really was an excellent showing against a Moors side in the division above.
The game finished 0-2 and another year where the cups pass us by, but I’m not disappointed about that as we are in a season where we need to sustain our Division 4 status and improve next season.
10/10 performances all over the pitch, with Rushy outstanding at wingback along with Omar, the back line (Kielan, Sanders & Bailee) absolutely excellent and Harrison superb again.
MOTM went to Ollie, by far his best performance of the season and one I’d like to see every week (that goes for all the lads), well done Ollie!
Another tough game Sunday when we face 2nd in the league Hillfield, I feel this run of games has been brutal !!!
All we can do is fight and not forget that we have won 5 games in this division so it’s not all doom and gloom!!
