Home league match
The Glebe U9 Jaguars hosted Petts Wood Bluebirds at Chislehurst on the morning of 14 December 2025, kicking off at 10:00am in a 7-a-side league fixture. Despite being short on players and having to adapt throughout the match, the Jaguars showed great character and determination in a 60-minute contest that eventually ended in a 5–1 scoreline in favour of the visitors.
Glebe lined up in a 2-3-1 formation, with several boys stepping into roles they do not usually play for the benefit of the team. Jax Surucu started in goal, supported by central defenders Micky Gorringe and Freddie Brown, who worked tirelessly to protect the back line. The midfield trio of Winston Goody (right), Lewis Whyte (centre), and George Martin (left) were asked to cover a lot of ground, contributing both defensively and in attack, while Harrison Elsey led the line as the lone striker, pressing bravely where possible. Freddie Chenery was named among the substitutes ready to support his team.
The match began at a challenging pace, with Petts Wood Bluebirds capitalising on early pressure to score in the 4th and 6th minutes. While this put Glebe on the back foot, the response from the Jaguars was admirable. They battled hard to regain control and began to create chances of their own. This determination was rewarded in the 13th minute when George Martin reacted sharply to score from close range, a goal that Glebe’s overall play and attacking intent fully deserved.
Following the goal, George Martin was replaced by Freddie Chenery, whose introduction brought renewed energy and drive. Glebe continued to compete strongly, with all the boys showing resilience and teamwork, but Petts Wood managed to restore their two-goal advantage with a strike in the 27th minute, taking a 3–1 lead into the break.
In the second half, Glebe U9 Jaguars refused to drop their heads. Despite facing a more clinical opponent, they continued to push forward, producing several attempts on goal and showing real attacking spirit. On another day, their efforts could easily have resulted in more goals. However, Petts Wood added further goals in the 45th and 55th minutes to extend their lead.
All of the Glebe players can be proud of their performance. Every boy fought hard from first whistle to last, with those playing out of position showing great maturity and commitment. Freddie Chenery’s outstanding work rate and positive influence earned him the Player of the Match award, while the referee managed the game calmly and fairly throughout.
Although the final scoreline did not reflect the effort and number of chances created by the Jaguars, there were many positives to take from the match. Glebe U9 Jaguars will look to build on this battling performance, the teamwork on display, and the willingness of every player to step up for the team as they prepare for their next challenge.
