Away league match

Glebe U9 Jaguar’s travelled to Queensmead Recreation Ground on 25 January 2026 for their league away fixture against AFC Shortlands, kicking off at 11:15am. Played in extremely wet and muddy conditions, the match demanded real determination and resilience, and Glebe rose superbly to the challenge, producing a dominant 5-0 victory over 60 minutes of seven-a-side football. All the boys deserve huge credit for playing with heart and strength throughout, bravely taking a few knocks and never letting the conditions affect their performance.

Glebe started brightly and nearly took the lead inside the opening minute when Lewis Whyte tested the goalkeeper with an early attempt on goal. The pressure continued and Glebe soon made it count, with Alexander Walsh opening the scoring in the 3rd minute after finishing well inside the box. Just a minute later, George Martin added another attempt as Glebe kept AFC Shortland pinned back, supported by strong link-up play and movement from the midfield unit.

Despite the early setback of Walsh being forced off injured in the 6th minute and replaced by Winston Goody, Glebe maintained their momentum. Lewis Whyte doubled the lead in the 7th minute with a confident finish from midfield, while Ben Insall and George Martin worked tirelessly on the flanks, tracking back well and helping Glebe control the middle of the pitch. Wins Goody added to the attacking pressure later in the half with a further attempt in the 36th minute as Glebe continued to dominate possession and territory.

Substitutions were used effectively to manage the heavy conditions, with Freddie Chenery and Micky Gorringe making positive contributions, bringing energy, composure, and defensive solidity when introduced. At the back, George Mansell and Freddie Brown were strong and disciplined, dealing well with everything AFC Shortland attempted, while Jax Surucu took over in goal midway through the half and showed excellent focus.

The second half saw no let-up from Glebe. Alexander Walsh returned to the action and quickly made his impact felt, scoring his second goal in the 46th minute after finishing a well-delivered cross from Winston Goody. Moments later, Goody got on the scoresheet himself, extending the lead to 4-0 as Glebe pressed relentlessly, supported by intelligent passing and unselfish play across the team.

Winston Goody capped an excellent performance with another goal in the 54th minute, delicately lobbing the goalkeeper to complete the scoring. Harry also went close in the 56th minute with a strong attempt as Glebe continued to create chances right to the final whistle.

Defensively, Glebe were outstanding throughout, with the back line and goalkeepers working together superbly to keep AFC Shortland at bay and secure a deserved clean sheet in difficult conditions.

Jax Surucu was named Player of the Match for his calm, assured goalkeeping and overall contribution, playing a key role in maintaining the clean sheet and organising play from the back.

Overall, this was a commanding and disciplined performance from Glebe U9 Jaguar’s, combining quality football with resilience, teamwork, and determination to earn a well-deserved 5-0 league victory.
