New oppo lined up with 4 women, in fact what I initially thought was 3 women and 1 child, so all the talk before the match was “let’s go a bit easy on them”, “don’t want to beat them by too much else they won’t want to play again“ etc.
The game started and immediately we knew it wouldn’t be easy. The guys they had could play a bit and were not afraid to get stuck in and the “child” in midfield (actually a short Kiwi woman) was bossing the midfield, really quick, with a great shot on her.
We were a bit rattled and a few passes started going astray and some moaning started.
Kiwi midfielder raced onto a ball I thought she had no chance of reaching after a cut back and Tyson made a smart save. Then we took the lead against the run of play when a Cesar corner was sliced into their own net by an oppo defender. Then just before half time a flick on from a free kick was met by one of the oppo players with an acrobatic overhead kick which smacked against the crossbar. To make matters worse, we had lost Luke to an injury after a block tackle. 1-0 at the break.
Second half, more of the same, good passing and breaks from the oppo, a curling shot from the Kiwi playmaker just wide. We were still misfiring a bit, but cross from Charlie found Ben who smacked in a good finish for 2-0 and that is how it ended.
At the end, I said to the Kiwi woman “you were really good, you should play for a proper team”. She said “I do”. Condescending, even when trying to pay a compliment.
PotM - has to be the Kiwi oppo midfielder.
