Villa 2nds hosted Rosario 2nds, once again at Londonderry Park due to the unavailability of Adams park with the weather. The game proved to be a tense affair. But in the end, Villa were edged out 1-0 after extra time.

The match began with both sides probing cautiously, but Villa’s James King was the first to attract attention, receiving a yellow card in the 24th minute for a bad tackle in the opposition box, signalling the physical nature of the contest. Shortly after, goalkeeper Ross Murray was called into action, confidently dealing with a wicked cross in windy conditions to deny Rosario a chance to break the deadlock. His alertness was again on show minutes later when he produced a full stretch save to keep Villa in the game.

Villa’s defence remained resolute, though the visitors tested them repeatedly. Curtis Shannon ventured forward and attempted a shot on goal in the 40th minute, but his effort sailed high over the bar, missing an opportunity to give his side the lead. The first half closed with neither side able to find a breakthrough, and the teams went in level at 0-0.

At half-time, Villa made a tactical substitution in the 58th minute, replacing the cautioned James King with Carson Mann coming on, and avoid the risk of a second booking. Injury forced a further change when Louis Gault-Reid was withdrawn and Mathew Burke came on in midfield. James Edwards then replaced Ryan Murray in a tactical switch, hoping to add something different into the attack.

The match extended into extra time after a stalemate in normal time. The intensity increased, and referee Costello issued a yellow card to a Rosario's coach in the 100th minute for dissent, reflecting the mounting frustration. The deadlock though, was finally broken around the 105th minute when Rosario capitalised on a defensive mistake by Villa, scoring the only goal of the match. Villa’s Daniel McFarland then received a yellow card immediately after, adding to the mounting pressure on the home side. A final caution was shown to a Rosario player in the dying minutes after Villa's Kyle Irwin was pushed into the surrounding fence, underscoring the heated nature of the encounter.

Despite Villa’s efforts to respond, they were unable to find an equaliser before the final whistle. The solitary goal in extra time proved decisive, sending Rosario 2nds through to the quarter Finals, and ending Villa’s Walter Moore hopes for another season.

In an very tight fought contest, Villa unfortunately were just were not at their best today, and Rosario showed why they are undefeated this season in league & cup. But most impressively undefeated in the league now since May 2024.?? Good luck to Rosario in the next round.

It looks like they will take some stopping this season.

Villa 2nds now have to put full concentration back into their 3A league campaign this season, and hopefully bounce back strong.

Up next, is the small task of traveling to Ulidia to play Rosario again next weekend. AVFC???????
