The league is divided into two divisions, the Premier League and the Championship. The top four teams in the Premier League qualify for the Peter Munro Cup, and the top four teams in the Championship qualify for the Steve Perkins Cup.
The HFL season runs from September to March. Each team plays each other team twice, once at home and once away. The top two teams in each division at the end of the season are promoted, and the bottom two teams in each division are relegated.
