The league was founded in 1920 by a group of local footballers. The initial six teams were Darlington Railway Athletic, Darlington Town, Darlington FC Reserves, Darlington Albion, Darlington St. Cuthbert's, and Darlington United.

The league has been won by a number of different teams over the years, including Darlington Railway Athletic, Darlington Town, and Darlington FC Reserves. The current champions are Darlington The Grey Horse.
