Home friendly match
Wythenshawe Town U15s played their only warm up game before the start of the league campaign against a very good and strong Under 16 South Manchester team.
After the initial confusion with the age groups which meant Town were in fact playing a team a year up the boys put a really fine display on, despite getting beat 4-1, a scoreline that probably flattered the opposition.
The game got off to the worst possible start for Town when after 2 minutes a miss hit cross from the South Manchester winger completely fooled everyone and ended up in the back of the net. South Manchester dominated the open stages with Town getting used to playing a team bigger and stronger.
Just as it looked like the Town boys were getting back into the game, South Manchester scored a controversial second on 14 minutes, when the ball was put in the net and the goal given despite it looking like the forward was at least 5 yards offside. This led to a lapse in concentration from Wythenshawe team and only minutes later a South Manchester player was brought down on the edge of the box after gliding easily through his opponents and the resulting free kick was converted.
It was with great credit that despite being 3 down the younger team then really went for it, playing some lovely football and creating lots of chances and were unlucky to go in 3 down at half time.
The second half started and both teams were playing some really good stuff, the Wythenshawe Town boys were showing lots of quality against a really good team and eventually scored when the ball landed in the box from a Theo free kick and Haris hooked the ball in.
The joy was short lived though, as Wythenshawe pushed after gaining even more confidence from the goal they left themselves short at the back and South Manchester restored their 3 goal lead.
In fairness both teams pushed for more goals in what was turning out to be a great game but the scoreline stayed as it was 4-1 to the visitors.
Despite the final result I don't think anyone watching thought the Town team deserved to lose by 3 goals. South Manchester were a great team and played some nice football and overall probably deserved to win by a smaller margin, but for most of the game the Town team matched up to them very well and can take loads of positives from this game.
Some fine performances all round for the boys, but Oskar on his debut for the club was so impressive. The former Sale Utd player was on top form, strong, quick, skillful and great with his distribution.
Onto the league season on Sunday...
