Wasps Secure Quarter Final Spot In Cup Shock

Wasps travelled to Division 1 opponents Halesowen Colts carrying the underdogs tag, following a pre-season defeat and with their respective league positions. With AJ and Taylor struggling with illness and missing Matty and Ben with injury, it made the uphill task even harder.

Wasps started strong and more than matched Halesowen, who found it hard to break through our stubborn back line, with Alex in commanding form. It was a pretty evenly fought half of football but with Wasps having the slight upper hand, having had two goals ruled out for offside from Luke and then Jack, just before half time. We were unlucky not to be in the lead at the break.

As expected, Halesowen came out with a purpose in the second half and started to pepper shots at our goal. Ethan was on top form showing good handling and giving the whole team confidence. We defended their corners well too.

This solid rear guard action gave the rest of the team the belief that we could go forward and look for the opener. The breakthrough came with 10 minutes left to play when tenacious work from player of the match Japser, down the left wing, saw him win back possession and then beat his man to put in a delightful cross. This delivery found Harry coming in on the back post to tap home from a yard out.

This looked like it could be the winner but with minutes to go, Halesowen levelled after a long range strike was saved by Ethan but fell to their striker who was quickest to react to prod home.

With the game tied at 1-1, that meant straight to penalties.

With nerves getting the better of a few, we missed 3 of the spot kicks in the shoot out. However, with the heroics of Ethan in goal, he set up Jack to then take the sudden death penalty and to clinch the shootout 5-4.

We now progress to the Quarter Finals and this win was more than well deserved.
