Away league match

Wasps travelled to Cookley to take on their Falcons side in our first away game of the season and in what was predicted to be our first major test of the campaign.

It was a difficulty start with Wasps sloppy in possession and Cookley taking full control of the opening exchanges. The oppositions quality shining through as they piled on the early pressure, gaining a number of corners and making it hard for us to get out of our own half.

However, as the half went on, we settled into the game and started to play some neat football and put them under pressure. This then lead to the opening goal when Matty again ran through at the advancing keeper. The strikers neat footwork saw him attempt to take it around the goalie, only to be brought down in the box for a penalty. Taylor stepped up and smashed home the spot kick to make it 2-0 at the break.

Wasps then quickly doubled our lead when Taylor slid in Matty who showed composure when baring down on the Falcons keeper. He cooly slotted the ball low and wheeled away in celebration as the ball nestled into the bottom corner.

The second half was a closely fought contest again, with Falcons throwing everything they had a the Wasps. Everyone was digging in and working hard, in particular Kieran in the middle of the park, who was able to break up their attacks and try and put us on the front foot. Jack was a constant threat down the ride hand side too and was unfortunate not to create a goal.

Falcons did manage to pull a goal back with a smooth finish but we showed the Wasps grit and strength by going down the other end and winning the second penalty of the game. Matty had attempted to swing in a cross but the defender was deemed to have stuck out his hand to give away the handball. Despite the Cookley protests the referee gave the penalty switch was again coolly converted by Taylor to give us the all-important third and winning goal. Cookley were able to snatch a second goal in the dying stages of the game to make it a nervy last few minutes but the back three and centre midfield, in particular, battled to the end and ensured that we took our first away points of the season, making it the perfect start and remaining top of the league.
