Wimborne Ease Into Next Round!

Still not quite sure how this cup competition got to this stage but a knock out cup competition it now is. The team travelled to Worthing minus Rhianna, Megan, Lila and Brooke on a stunning autumn day with wall to wall sunshine.

The whistle blew after an impeccably observed minutes silence. Although a slightly passive start by the girls a steady flurry of early chances were created, Izzy and Olivia probably the closest to opening the scoring. Again, the team looked strong in the defensive element, Eva and Charlotte in total control at the heart of defence, Sophie and Maddie as attacking full backs, encouraged to support their more forward team mates. Jess and Laila offered a bit of extra protection centrally although this system was tweaked later in the match as the team got more on top of their opponents. The hosts battled hard in the early part of the match and it took a bit of Emilia magic to break the deadlock with 30 minutes played, lettting fly from distance and finding the corner of the net (0-1). Emilia was showing her raw talent again within a minute, her next effort flying fractionally over the cross bar. The team were not at their best in the half although were always the more dominant team, Carly, Lily and Bay had entered proceedings but it took a strange OG to increase the advantage, a back pass completely missed by the home goalkeeper who turned to watch the ball roll inside the goalpost a couple of minutes before the break (0-2).

HT 0-2

A better start to the second half, Olivia, who had been at the heart of the best attacking play in the first period drove narrowly wide prior to shooting just over, both made by Emilia’s trickery. Olivia was to stamp her mark on this match however, just after the hour mark finding space in the penalty area to fire an unstoppable drive into the corner of the goal (0-3). Izzy’s well placed corner kick caused confusion, resulting in a second own goal (0-4) and she was again the creator, crossing for Olivia to head her second goal (0-5) with seven minutes remaining.

There was still time for a final goal, Carly and Olivia linking play and Emilia finding the room to strike her second goal of the game (0-6).

POM: Sophie ( Quietly goes about her business, strong defensively and first to press the the ball in the opponents half)

Summary: a great result for the team, giving them a place in the next round of the knock out cup. A bit scrappy at times, they remained patient and reaped rewards in the second half. Another sound defensive effort from the girls saw the team close out a comfortable victory.
