***Pauls Match Report***

At Ascot…but not at the races!

Not a great build up for this one, unable to train this week due to pitch unavailability although the team were looking to build on recent positive results. Injury, unavailability and Covid meant that only 13 travelled. Imperative the team made a solid start today against a very strong Ascot side.

Within two minutes played the team found themselves a goal down and a mountain to climb, a panicky clearance sliced to the edge of the penalty box and dispatched by an alert centre forward (1-0). Hopefully, a nasty looking injury to an Ascot player that stopped the game for 10 minutes will not be as bad as first thought.

It was only to get worse for the girls’, good intensity off the ball, closing spaces well but clearly second best in possession today to a good footballing side. A corner kick led to the second goal, with no defender on the front post, Ascot quickest to claim an easy finish from second phase in the penalty box and score inside the post (2-0). A goal of quality gave the hosts a third before the break, quick passing through the lines and finished well (3-0).

HT 3-0

Two minutes into the second half and a passage of play that basically summed up and told you everything you needed to know about the game, Emilie looking to pull goal back after a strong jinking run into the penalty area brought a good save. Quick distribution, a fast break and cross that was mis-handled to give the home team another easy tap in from nothing. Looking like 3-1 but then 4-0 down in the space of 30 seconds and in all honesty game over. Not through a lack of trying but the half played out without any more goals, both goalkeepers with little to worry them.

FT:

Ascot 4-0 WTFC

POM: Jess (ran herself into the ground until cramp forced her off late into the match).

Summary:

In football terms, a horrible game for the girls’. Just ‘off it’ today in a match where they could have made a real statement but it wasn’t to be. Big mistakes certainly did not help the cause but also when in possession, could not find the quality to fully test a good opponent.

The team can now put this match aside, re-group Weds in prep for a JpL cup fixture against Hartland next weekend.

It will be interesting to see the team bounce back….which I’m sure they will!
