Scoreline Harsh On Town!

Early season form suggested this would be a stern test for the team. In previous matches, both teams had scored plenty of goals but results also indicated that Inspire were a solid defensive team and would be a tough nut to crack.

The visitors began the game well, dominating territory and testing the Wimborne back line. They were rewarded when the referee adjudged Amelia’s challenge to be worthy of a penalty kick, which was duly dispatched (0-1). The girls’ used the goal against as a trigger and began to get a toe hold in the game, a flowing move ending with Liv on the end of Emilie’s cross but her attempt just the wrong side of the post. The team’s next raid into their opponents area saw the penalty count evened up, Emilie earning the spot kick for Meg to smash into the LH corner of the goal, an execution that a certain H. Kane would have been proud of(1-1). A very even game now, both teams passing well, if anything the only difference was that Inspire were quick to get their shots away around the edge of the penalty area and not overplay. It was one of these high shots that edged the visitors in front again with half an hour gone (1-2). Probably stating the obvious but the next goal was going to be crucial, a two goal deficit against a strong Inspire team would be tough. If Izzy’s free kick from 25+ yards had crept in rather than striking the upright and Brooke not seen her shot saved the scoreline could have been totally different.

HT 1-2

A really tough second half for the girls, it seemed that every time the visitors got around the edge of the area, or in the box, a goal came from it, well taken goals taking the visiting team clear with five unanswered goals in the half (3/4/5/6/7-1). Wimborne had their own chances but could not match their opponents clinical finishing.

FT: 1-7.

POM: Abi (gave her all…tenacious)

Summary:

A big learning curve for the girls today. A game in which at times in the first half they played some of their best football to date. A bit too much space was given around the edge of the box and the team paid the price for it, a lack of sharpness in the attacking final third also needs to be worked on. From back to front there really wasn’t much to choose between the teams. On paper, anyone reading this scoreline would get a false indication of the way this match was played.

This team will be more prepared when these sides meet in the return match.
