Magpies Up Their Game!

A stunning Autumn morning on the grass at Cobham for the visit of Oxford Elite. Early season results suggested this would be a tough test for the team. Belle had shaken off a hamstring injury to earn her spot and was joined by Rose for her first start having recovered from her own injury problems.

A brilliant start for the team, on the front foot causing the visiting team all sorts of problems from the first whistle. They did not have to wait long before Izzy created the opening for Liv to prod the first goal of the game (1-0).

The early combination play was a delight and Oxford at times were chasing shadows. Three minutes after the opening goal, the ball was worked wide to Emilie, her teasing cross was met by Izzy and her controlled volley flashed past the goalkeeper (2-0). The only surprise was that more chances were not converted although it was not for the lack of trying, Meg, Liv and Emilie all going close. The second quarter evened out, the girls still probing but unable to create another clear cut chance. The threat from Oxford came from corner kicks but the girls coped with them well.

HT 2-0

The first 20 minutes of the second period was much like the end of the first half, the team not over committing, determined to hang on to what they had earned and to wait for the opportunities to come. Chances did come, Liv’s effort saved from Emilie’s cross and Emilie forcing an error, driving forward and shooting narrowly wide. A little bit of a lull in the game was blown away with 15 mins remaining, Izzy latching onto Megan’s pass and unleashing a shot from 25yards over the goalkeeper and into the roof of the goal (3-0). Kacey cut in from the flank to fire narrowly wide, Izzy had another strike saved prior to the final nail in Oxfords coffin, Megan again the creator and Liv again the finisher, showing her strength in holding off her defender and passing the ball into the corner of the goal (4-0). The final whistle soon followed, wrapping up a comprehensive victory for the team.

FT: 4-0

POM: Carly (seems rejuvenated in deep midfield along side Jess….controlled aggression, calmness and worked tirelessly) To be fair, could make a case from most of them today!

Summary:

A strong performance from the girls today. The emphasis on Tuesday had been defensive shape…Centrally, Amelia, Sophie and captain Eva, screened by Jess and Carly let next to nothing through the guard, on the rare times the visitors did manage to break the lines, Eva and Sophie shut the door with recovery tackles that protected Esme in goal. Esme showed good handling skills when called upon. Lauren and Lila very strong in their roles along with Annabel and Belle. Good to see Belle and Rose today on road to recovery. Kacey tricked and teased, Emilie and Meg unlocked the doors for Izzy and Liv to bag the goals.

A big step up today…well done to all!
