Emilia At The Double!

The girls made the long trip to Sussex for a re-arranged cup match against unknown opposition in Crawley Town.

Wimborne struck with a mere two minutes played, Emilia pressing the goalkeeper, robbing her of the ball, composing before rolling the ball into the open goal (0-1). The team held the lead for a full two minutes! Crawley finding the net after hesitancy in the Wimborne defence (1-1). Emilia went close from Izzy’s cross but from the next play she was to make no mistake, Olivia sliding the ball to Emilia who’s drive from 10 yards was too strong for the goalkeeper (1-2). During the half, the home team showed they were not throwing the towel in any time soon and it took a gritty defensive shift to keep them at arms length.

HT 1-2

Quite how Crawley failed to equalise at the start of the second period is anyone’s guess! A fast break into the penalty area gave the home attacker time to lift the ball over Esme in goal, the ball rebounded to her teammate off the underside of the crossbar but with the goal at her mercy managed to hit the post when easier to score. As the girls rode their luck at times the hosts struck the upright again in the half when searching for an equaliser. Liv and Abi both had tame efforts saved but it generally proved a fragmented second half. Although struggling to get their passing game going they did show the determination and the will to win necessary which got them over the line.

FT: Crawley 1

WTFC 2

POM: Belle (a player that is 2 years younger than most in this league but always fights for the team and leaves nothing on the pitch)

Summary:

An intriguing but scrappy affair that the girls just about edged. They have played better and lost this season but although not a free flowing match, they dug in and stood up for themselves against a strong physical team. This result confirms they have won their cup group so are likely to play stronger teams in the knockout rounds.

Well done team!!!
