One That Got Away!

The team travelled to Andover to play the league leaders in a much anticipated clash. An entertaining 2-2 game last time out, Town the only side to take points from their opponents this season.

The team made an anxious start to the match, not managing to secure the ball which made for a scrappy first few minutes. The defensive line was breached with only 5 minutes in, a long kick from the GK and the centre forward given too much time to compose herself before lifting the ball over Millie for the opening goal (1-0). The goal shocked the team into life, passes started to connect and the girls gradually began to control the pace of the game. Megan shot just wide from a sweeping move, Brooke took aim but fired fractionally too high with the intensity building. 16 minutes played and Brooke fed Emilia just inside the penalty box, her low drive well saved and Meg mopping up, tapping in for the equaliser (1-1). It was nothing more than the team deserved, now playing the kind of football they are capable of and within 3 minutes of the leveller they took the lead, Izzy and Brooke pressurising the mistake and Emilia looping the ball over the GK and into the net (1-2). The girls maintained their levels throughout the half and were unlucky not to increase the lead, on the stroke of half time, Annabel’s strike well saved by the home GK.

HT 1-2

The half time whistle had come at the wrong time for the team, the girls’ finding it difficult to recapture the intensity shown in the first period and the host team scrambled an equaliser within 6 minutes of the restart to restore parity (2-2). Liv saw a goal disallowed for offside and another chance saved before the game was turned on its head as far as Wimborne were concerned. A more aggressive Andover side knocked the girls’ out of their stride and three goals in the final 25 minutes (5-2) gave the scoreline a strangely unrealistic look to those that had watched the game.

FT:

Andover. 5

WTFC. 2

POM: Jess (the unsung heroine of the team/ hard working, clam and assured).

Summary:

An accomplished first half display had the shine taken off it in a frustrating final 25 minutes. Games at this level can turn quickly if levels drop slightly but quite how the team ended up losing by three goals today I’m not quite sure!

Congratulations to Andover on the league title….But you got away with one today!
