Town Up And Running!

Wimborne took to the pitch for their opening league game of the season, Stoneham the visitors to the New Cuthbury.

Another strong start from the girls, settling quickly and it wasn’t long to wait before creating the first chance of note, Liv firing wide from Lauren’s clever pass. Izzy in particular was unsettling a visiting team that were struggling to get a foothold in the match and her persistence soon paid off, Emily the creator and Izzy with a sweet strike that whistled into the corner of the goal (1-0). The goal scorer turned provider a minute later, Liv with the clinical finish to continue her excellent early season form. This goal scorer then turned provider, flicking a header into the path of Meg who showed an equally clinical finishing touch (3-0). Emily had a strong effort well saved before the team were reminded there were two teams on the pitch, with their first chance, a high looping effort caught Millie off guard to reduce the arrears (3-1). On the stroke of half time Carly showed her quality, picking her moment to feed Brooke who controlled and drilled her shot into the far corner of the goal for her first of the season (4-1).

HT 4-1

A wounded Stoneham side came out with more purpose in the second half and although offside, Millie was not to know when producing a superb save. As is normal, mass changes meant for a settling period and with some girls still getting used to their roles a Stoneham player was upended in the box and a penalty awarded. Millie got everything behind the ball to save the spot kick. Asked to play totally out of her comfort zone, Carly was relishing a CDM role, springing forwards at every opportunity. Her good work lead to the next goal, a run and pass that diverted off Meg into Izzy’s path and was planted crisply into the back of the net (5-1). Another nice moment with nine minutes left, Izzy with another assist and Kacey finding the top corner with her first goal for the team (6-1).

FT: 6-1

POM: Izzy (a superb brace of goals and assists and was a constant threat all game) Tough on Carly and Jess!!!

Summary:

A bit open at times but another great result for the girls.

Some very good stuff individually in defence…..Eva and Sophie combative and strong at the heart, Annabelle and Vienna with sound displays, Lila and Lauren in particular looking to add an attacking side to their defending. Defences take time to get right and these girls will go from strength to strength as a group. A couple of quality saves from Millie in between the sticks including her penalty save. Jess shone again at deep mid and paired well with an impressive Carly and our more forward players showed they will cause troubles for anyone they play and will continue to improve. Em, Talulla, Kacey all had good spells in the game, Izzy at her tormenting best and Meg, Liv and Brooke all leading the line with assurance.

Well done ladies!
