vs Whitley Bay Boys Club Seniors

Home league match

For the Second week in a row the Saints bounced back from a defeat on Saturday to record a win on Wednesday as they overcame a late surge from the visitors.

Switching back to a simpler 4-4-2 formation the Quay were without top scorer Joe Connor who was replaced by Findlay Rippin, Luke Gribbin made his first ever Saints start and there was a recall for Stephen King

Any worries about where the goals were going to come from were soon dispelled as youngster Rippin volleyed the Saints into a fifth minute lead.

Henda was just about to volley a second (or so he says) when he was hauled down in the box by a Whitley defender. Andy Breheny took over penalty duties and smashed the ball home to double the lead.

With confidence flowing the Quay added a third, new signing Ian Graham played a fantastic through ball into the path of Rippin who coolly slotted the ball past the onrushing keeper.

Phil Doolan should of made it 4 but he just lost his composure at the last second as the Whitley keeper blocked his effort .

With the Quay tiring slightly Whitley came into the game and were almost handed the easiest of goals as Saints keeper Lowery dropped the ball at the feet of a Whitley player who didn't have time to react before Lowery recovered.

Henda was booked for a scything hack down of a Whitley player on the hour mark just minutes before the visitors pulled one back. a perfectly weighted corner fell into the path of centre half Liam Blythe and he smashed a thunderous volley into the corner leaving Lowery with no chance.

Whitley sensed a comeback but they couldn't find a breakthrough until 2 minutes from time as Blythe grabbed another heading home from 16 yards after a shot was fired towards him.

The whistle went shortly after with Whitley unable to grab an unlikely point, the first half was the best of the Saints so far this season hopefully the little blip at the start has been sorted.
