Home league match
Westfield secured the clubs first silverware in 22 years after an outstanding performance against their closest challengers Little Common on a beautiful spring afternoon in front of the Parish Fields biggest crowd of the season.
Despite Westfield knowing just a point would suffice they came flying out of the blocks and could easily have taken the lead early on. With Billy Blackford and the returning Leon Mende restricting the Common attackers to speculative long range efforts, which were easily dealt with by JJ Blanche, the full back pairing of Isaac Miller and man of the match George Maclean had the freedom to support the attack and get forward when possible. The midfield three of Joe Page, Steve Payne and captain Dayne Beaumont provided tireless work rate and excellent use of the ball to often cut through the Common back line. And the forward three of Lee ‘Train’ Paine, Jack Whiteman and Jay Edwards gave the Common defence no end of problems with their direct running and expert hold up play.
However it was the introduction of midfield pairing Alan Johnson and Jordan Yahya that truly swung the tie in Westfields favour. Mid way through the second half Johnson brilliantly anticipated a loose ball in the box and was felled inside the area by the Common keeper as he retrieved the ball. Johnson stepped up to confidently roll home his 6th goal of the season and give the Westies a much deserved lead.
Common could have equalised shortly after but their star player, Leo Field, saw his strike from the edge of the area come crashing down off the bar after an amazing reflex save from Blanche.
In the 87th minute Steve Payne secured the points and the league title when he superbly volleyed home a Jordan Yayha centre from 10 yards out. 2-0 and full time.
Cue wild celebrations which continued long in to the night as Westfield rounded off a brilliant season with a brilliant performance and a much deserved league title. ????
