Saturday provided Watling with a chance to really show what can be expected this season as they faced the unbeated Woburn who had won Div 3 in the MK league last season without losing a game.
A slow start from Watling found them 1-0 down inside 2 minutes following a driven free kick that was deflected home by the Woburn player.
It took Watling 10 minutes to get going but once they did they quickly became equals to Woburn. Just over halfway through the first have a brilliant move down the right led to a delightful flick from Sam into Matt's path and of course he did the rest.
A very even first half ended with Woburn grabbing a goal 5 minutes before the break through a brilliant cross field pass, a decent touch by the forward and a cool finish.
We saw a different Watling in the second half with Matt winning and despatching a penalty shortly after the break.
The penalty seemed to send Watling up a couple of gears as they added a further three goals inside 9 minutes. A hat-trick for Harry with one sublime assist for Sam saw Watling race into a three goal lead.
Watling had done very well seeing the game out until a soft penalty was awarded in the final 3 minutes to give Woburn a lifeline. All of a sudden 5-3 became a panic but hey, it would be boring if we saw a game out comfortably! Fantastic effort from the boys to dig in and see it through means the boys after 4 games sit top of the league by 2 points and have set up a good platform to now build on.
