QUICHE START 2016 SEASON IN WINNING STYLE

Unimount Quiche opened the 2016 campaign on Saturday with a resounding 5-2 victory over Ellerslie Diamonds.

The first half was fairly evenly balanced, with both sides looking to settle into a playing rhythm early on. Quiche, however, made the most of their chances, and turned around with a well deserved 4-1 lead - goals coming from David, with a superb shot cunningly disguised as a cross for most of its journey; from Tom with a well-struck slice into the top corner from distance; and two well-placed shots from Johno2.

As could have been expected, Ellerslie came out after half-time with all guns blazing, throwing everything they had at the Quiche defence. They were, however, denied by some stalwart defending, with Phil, making up for his loss of pace from last season with some shrewd marshalling of the defence, and Saeed (looking like a slightly smaller version of Peter Schmeichel), proving a solid last line. He was unfortunately forced to reveal his secret weapon (a karate chop to the head of the opposing striker) and future opposition will now be prepared for this tactic.

In the event, the Quiche defence conceded only one goal during this period of intense pressure, and the result was sealed shortly after with an opportunistic goal from MP, following some bewildering footwork from Marek. Thereafter Ellerslie lost some heart, and Quiche could easily have had several more goals, with MP rattling the crossbar from 2 yards out, and Johno2 missing out on a hat-trick by a matter of centimetres.

Man of the Match was Tom (although there were rumours of money changing hands), and the overall team performance represents a very promising start to the season. The competition for the Golden Boot between MP, Johno2 and David looks like being an enthralling one.

Next week's game is against Ellerslie Sadler at 12 o'clock at Bill Mckinlay Park.

GO THE QUICHE !!!
