After our opening day defeat v CSV we were up against a strong Phoenix Downs team who had won their opening match. They started well and gained control of the midfield and were looking to switch play to their very skillful left winger who was causing Hardo problems.
We barely got a foot hold in the game and managed just one shot on goal in the first half when Tom Hedges let rip with a good effort from 25 yards that was well saved by the keeper.
Nick Wilson pulled up mid way through the first half with a hamstring injury so we brought Pete Clare on up front and Theo on the right of midfield.
Nathan kept us in the game with two very good saves when it looked like they would score. However just when we thought we'd go in at half time level, they broke down the right and the left winger was there to slide it home to make it 1-0.
We brought Hardo off for a breather as he was going dizzy after being turned inside out by the winger and to be honest Trippy wasn't looking forward to marking him either! However when we went out for the 2nd half the winger had disappeared and not to be seen again!
The half time team talk was all about putting their keeper under more pressure and get crosses in and shots on target. We got our reward when Billy took a quick throw to Derek who played it back for Billy to whip in a deep cross which thankfully drifted over the keepers head and in to the top corner to make it 1-1.
Phoenix were still looking dangerous though and they took the lead about 15 mins to go when their winger got down the right and pulled it back for their centre back (what was he doing there?) to smash in to make it 2-1.
We kept going though and we managed to equalise with 2 mins to go. Derek shot from the edge of the area and the keeper spilled it into the path of Tom Hedges who bundled the ball home to make it 2-2 and we thought game over.
However straight from the kick off Phoenix broke down the left and the winger left Trippy for dead crossing to the far post where the winger looked like he was going to slide into an empty net, before Billy McGregor had no option but to pull him back and give away a penalty. Gutted!
However the Phoenix player bottled it and pulled the ball wide of the right hand post. Game over we thought again. However, they broke down the left again and the winger pulled the ball back again to be hit home for the winner with the last kick of the game.
We were gutted as we'd battled back twice after a poor first half and looked to have got a hard earned point. However we didn't see the game out.
