In a thrilling friendly encounter at Hamsteels Collery Welfare on 2nd March 2025, The Turf FC faced Craghead Legion.
The Turf lined up in a 4-1-3-2 formation, showcasing a solid defensive structure complemented by a dynamic attacking midfield. Andy Gowland took his place between the sticks, while a back four comprised of Ben Walton on the right, Robert Grzebyk and Danny Berry in central defence, and Jonny Thirlaway on the left provided a sturdy barrier. Captain Lewis Sullivan operated as a central midfielder, tasked with linking defence and attack, while Brad Jones and Lewis Currie flanked Joe Currie, who played in a more advanced role as an attacking midfielder. Up front, Ian Johnstone was joined by Ian Carrick making his debut, aiming to convert chances into goals.
The match began with both teams probing for weaknesses, but it was The Turf FC who struck first. In the 15th minute, Lewis Currie found the back of the net, showcasing his clinical finishing ability and giving his side an early lead. The Turf's confidence surged as they continued to press forward, and their efforts bore fruit again in the 35th minute when Ian Carrick doubled the advantage, leaving Craghead reeling.
However, the tide turned shortly after the interval. Just five minutes into the second half, Craghead Legion responded with a stunning long-range strike, carried by the wind and past Gowland, narrowing the deficit to 2-1. The momentum shifted dramatically, and the home side capitalised on their newfound energy. In the 55th minute, they equalised with a lofted header, leaving The Turf's defence scrambling.
The situation worsened for The Turf in the 60th minute when Craghead Legion took the lead after a corner was put away by the opposition, scoring another header that left Gowland with little chance to intervene. In response to the mounting pressure, The Turf made a substitution, bringing on Damo Freeman for Danny Berry in an attempt to shore up the defence.
Despite their best efforts to regain control, The Turf struggled to create clear-cut chances in the latter stages of the match. Craghead Legion held firm, defending their lead with determination and resilience. As the final whistle blew, The Turf were left to reflect on a match that had promised so much but ultimately delivered a bitter disappointment.
