Home friendly match

Stroud United Firsts welcomed Westbury United to Stratford Court on 12 July 2025 for a friendly encounter that ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat for the home side. The match kicked off at 2:00 pm, with a modest crowd of 30 spectators witnessing a competitive display from both teams.

Stroud United opted for a 4-2-1-3 formation, designed to provide a solid defensive base while allowing for attacking flair. Josh Fletcher took his position in goal, shielded by a back four consisting of Sam Jones on the right, Jamie Snell and Bram Bax-Pratt in central defence, and Josh Fisher on the left. In front of them, Nathan Green and Josh George operated as central midfielders, tasked with both breaking up opposition play and supporting the attack. Elliot James played as the attacking midfielder, looking to link up with the front three of Ryan Sims on the right, Marshall Stokes as the central striker, and Harvey Masson on the left.

The match began with both teams probing for weaknesses, with Stroud United striking first. A well taken finish from Marshall Stokes, assisted by Harvey Masson.

As the first half progressed, both teams continued to create chances, but neither could convert, leading to a tense atmosphere as the half drew to a close.

The second half saw Westbury United come out with renewed vigour, and get the equaliser through a direct free-kick. They soon took the lead with a second goal that tested Stroud United's resolve. Despite the setback, Stroud United maintained their attacking intent, with Masson and Stokes linking up effectively in the final third.

As the match wore on, Stroud United pushed for an equaliser, but Westbury's defence held firm, thwarting several attempts on goal. The home side's frustration grew as time slipped away, and despite their best efforts, they could not find a way back into the match.

In the end, Stroud United's performance was commendable, particularly from Harvey Masson, who was recognised as the standout player of the match. The friendly concluded with Westbury United emerging victorious, leaving Stroud United with lessons to take into their future fixtures.
