Home friendly match
Stroud United Firsts welcomed GNSL div 2 champions Falcons to Stratford Court on 19 July 2025 for a friendly match that ended with a scoreline of 0-1 in favour of the away side. The match kicked off at 3:00pm, with a modest crowd of 60 spectators in attendance to witness the action unfold.
Stroud United lined up in a 4-2-1-3 formation, designed to provide a solid defensive base while allowing for attacking flair. Adam Masson took his place in goal, shielded by a back four consisting of Joel Hobbs on the right, Josh Fisher on the left, and the central defensive pairing of Sam Counter and Jake Gardiner. In front of them, Nathan Green and Josh George operated as central midfielders, tasked with both breaking up opposition play and supporting the attack. Lewis Slinn played as the attacking midfielder, looking to link up with the front three, which featured Jordan Measures on the right, Marshall Stokes as the central striker, and Harvey Masson on the left.
The match began with both teams probing for an early advantage, but it was Falcons who broke the deadlock, either side of Stokes' offsides. Stroud's midfield duo of Green and George worked tirelessly to dominate possession, allowing Slinn to push forward and create opportunities for the forwards.
As the first half progressed, Stroud United's attacking intent became increasingly evident. They created several chances, with Measures and Harvey Masson frequently testing the Falcons' defence. However, despite their efforts, the first half ended 1 nil to the visitors, with the referee, Wayne Irvine, signalling for half-time at the 45-minute mark.
The second half saw Stroud United's defence, marshalled expertly by Counter and Gardiner, held firm, repelling the visitors' advances and ensuring that Masson remained largely untroubled in goal.
As the match drew to a close, Stroud United continued to press for an equaliser but to no avail. Sam Counter's commanding performance at the back earned him the accolade of Player of the Match.
In summary, Stroud United Firsts showcased their potential in this friendly encounter against Falcons, demonstrating solid defensive organisation and effective attacking play, setting a positive tone for the upcoming season.
