On Saturday 13 September 2025, Stony Stratford Town Lions U12 travelled to Olney Football Club for a 9-a-side league encounter against Olney Harriers U12, kicking off at 10:45am. The Lions were defeated 2-0 after a hard-fought 60 minutes plus added time in a match that tested their defensive resilience and attacking intent.
Stony Stratford Town Lions lined up in a 3-3-2 formation, deploying three defenders, three midfielders, and two forwards. Earl Preedy took his place between the sticks as goalkeeper, with Mason Davies positioned at right defender, Jayden Howard-Purnell centrally, and Jacob Cathcart on the left. The midfield trio consisted of Teddy Green on the right, Ellis Pavitt in the centre, and Luca Laera Bury on the left, tasked with linking defence and attack. Up front, Harry Beale operated as the right forward, while Sean Imeson occupied the left forward role, both expected to spearhead the Lions’ offensive efforts. Alfie Willis was named among the substitutes, ready to be called upon if tactical changes were required.
The match began with both sides probing cautiously, but it was Olney Harriers who broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute. Their goal came from an incisive strike outside the box, expertly dispatched with the right foot inside the penalty area, leaving the Stony Stratford defence and goalkeeper with little chance. The Lions struggled to regain composure but remained organised as the half progressed. The referee brought the first half to a close at the 30-minute mark with Olney leading 1-0.
Early in the second half, Stony Stratford Town made a tactical substitution at the 35th minute, bringing on Alfie Willis to replace left defender Jacob Cathcart. This change aimed to bolster the defensive line and provide fresh legs as the Lions sought to overturn the deficit. Despite this adjustment, Olney Harriers extended their advantage in the 51st minute, converting a penalty with a close-range right-foot finish that doubled their lead. The penalty was awarded following an infringement in the box, and the Harriers took full advantage to put the game beyond doubt.
Throughout the remainder of the match, Stony Stratford Town Lions pressed forward in search of a goal but were unable to break down a disciplined Olney defence. Harry Beale, operating on the right forward flank, was a constant threat and was deservedly named player of the match for his tireless work rate and attacking endeavour. However, the Lions could not find a way past the Olney goalkeeper, and the final whistle confirmed a 2-0 victory for the home side.
The referee’s performance was steady, maintaining control over the 60-minute contest with a rating of 5, ensuring the game flowed with minimal disruption. The crowd of 27 spectators witnessed a competitive encounter that ultimately saw Olney Harriers claim all three points on their home turf. Stony Stratford Town Lions will look to regroup and build on their efforts as the league campaign continues.
