The lads narrowly lost out on penalties yesterday after a pulsating cup tie down in Ayrshire. We made the trip down to Kilwinning yesterday to face the unbeaten Paisley league leaders, for our 4th visit in the last 18mths.
A really tight cup tie played in front of a large crowd - this was exciting from the start. Playing slightly into awkward swirling wind Kilwinning started on the front foot and were pressing us high in the first 10 mins. With the ball holding up in the wind the ball in behind was causing problems. They got their goal in that period as well - a long range shot taking an unfortunate deflection off one of our defenders heads and looped over Cammy. After that Cammy in goals and the defence did a great job to keep our hosts from any further scoring.
We equalised in 18mins - Tyler with an excellent through ball to Dan who finished with his usual calmness. The game was punctuated by stoppages and set-pieces - the referee giving fouls for almost any 50/50 contact which meant the game didn't flow particularly well. Despite the controversy from last years games this was played in good spirits and credit to both sets of players. This did mean both defences had to deal with lots of tricky freekicks and corners with the swirling wind making it tricky to deal with. Half-time and 1-1 - with us doing well to get through a testing first half which Kilwinning had the best of.
Into the 2nd half and roles were reversed. It was actually easier playing into the diagonal wind with the ball holding up. We had a couple of excellent chances to grab the lead but fired over from great positions twice. Dan brought a stunning save from their keeper when his freekick from 20yrds was tipped wide. Kilwinning also still carried a threat but predominantly from free-kicks into the box which Cammy dealt with terrificaly all afternoon.
Onto penalties and with the first 6 pens all scored - we then missed one and had one saved to finally bow out of the tournie.
I wanted to take this chance to again congratulate the lads on their incredible Scottish Cup form. That's still only 1 defeat inside normal time in the tournament across 4 seasons, and 30 games. The boys last defeat inside normal time coming in Feb 2023 - again at the quarter final stage to Lochend, before then winning it in 2024 and 2025. To battle through so many ties - particularly those at tough locations, away from home is a massive credit to them all.
Three trophies still to play for from here and we're focussed on adding to our silverware this season.
Congratulations to Kilwinning on a hard fought win and all the best for the remainder of the tournament.
MOTM - Dan led the line well today, grabbing a goal and so close to our second, but given the challenging conditions it goes to Cammy in goals today. Caught everything under severe pressure and a reassuring presence in goals all afternoon.
