Away league match

For the second consecutive Saturday Stafford Town went away from home and scored three goals but were again left ruing what might have been. “Defensive breaches are costing us severely so far this season and it has to change as we simply can’t keep giving ourselves an uphill task before getting into the game. We’re creating chances and scoring goals but defensively it has to be better” – Steve Barrow joint manager. Town started bright with the industrious Anwar Olugbon shaving the Heath crossbar in the opening minutes. An incisive throughball from central midfield split right back Matt Dean and winger Nathan Scott who was slow to track the run of Heaths Charlie Marshall. Marshall squared first time for the unmarked Nick Wellecomme to side foot home from 5 yards out with both centre backs caught ball watching. Young debutant Tom Horsley put in a solid performance but will learn from a rush of blood that saw him bring down Jack Edwards who duly smashed the resultant penalty home for a 2-0 halftime lead. Wellecomme was again afforded far too much space in the town box and dinked the ball over the advancing Horsley for 3-0. Perhaps the Town players relaxed as the game was to all intents and purposes over as a competition but they rallied and goals from Olugbon and Tom Duffy turned the complexion of the game completely before a sublime lob from Heath substitute Aaron O’Neil made things more comfortable for the hosts in the last few minutes. Town still weren’t done fighting however and a composed Kyle Wainwright collected Olugbons rebound off the far post to calmly square the ball for the onrushing Nathan Scott to slam home for a final score of 4-3.

Yet again it is mistakes and not applying the basics for the entirety of the game that is proving the difference. Some really positive things to build on but the errors are match defining and overshadowing the positives as they are the difference between putting points on the table and not. Every error is being punished currently by the sides being afforded them.
