A goalless draw ensured a precious point for the Saints supporters as they fight to maintain their Premier status.

It was a hard-earned result which brought some cheer to the Buddies fans’ team, sadly dashed a day later when the senior team lost out to Hamilton Academicals FC.

Still, both sides remain odds on to stay in the top flight, and St Mirrenoff had a determined team effort to thank for their result against Clyde.

A sandy Elderslie surface meant little chance of a free-flowing, passing game on Sunday, but while defences were ultimately on top, there was plenty of entertainment for the smattering of supporters in attendance.

Indeed, two Manchester Saints fans who made the journey north to cheer on their colleagues will have departed suitably proud of Mirrenoff’s display.

Their back three of Ian Craig, Chris Adam and the adaptable Fraser Gray took a no-nonsense approach in dealing with the Clyde frontmen, while top keeper Craig Muir was quick to come off his line and snuff out any signs of danger.

Clyde were winning the aerial battle in midfield, but lacked the creativity to turn possession into goals, while at the other end, Saints carved out a couple of good opportunities.

First David Christie cut in from the right and delivered a left-foot cross which flashed between the onrushing Saints strikers and Broadwood keeper.

Then David Wilson swept an inswinging free-kick into the danger area, but again the ball evaded a Saints’ player’s head.

Up front, Ryan Keenan and Craig Sinclair were having to feed off scraps, the Saints midfield largely occupied in a defensive capacity, with Chris Dailly in particular earning the plaudits for his tenacious tackling.

In the second half, Clyde did manage to test Muir on a couple of occasions, but he was not found wanting.

And Saints sub David Brydson carved out a neat opportunity for himself, but was narrowly off target, while Wilson opted to pass when the chance to shoot opened up with minutes left on the clock.

In the end, a draw felt a fair result, leaving two league matches for Saints to guarantee their safety.

On Sunday (8 May), St Mirrenoff switch from league duty to take on Sandbank Rangers in the League Cup Semi-Final. Kick-off at the University of the West of Scotland’s sports campus is 1pm.
