St Mary’s went goal ballistic against an under strength Red Star side tonight at Hydebank to keep them on course for a top two finish in the David Winter Cup which would ensure a cup final place come the season’s end.

Patrick Ross, restored to his familiar midfield anchor role fired the opening chance narrowly wide on three minutes before Eoin O’Reilly showed how it was done, netting a quick fire treble. The first came though good work by Ross, the second resulted from the Red Star goalie failing to clutch an Eoin McNicholl corner, while another McNicholl through ball was expertly finished with barely fifteen minutes gone.

It was all St Mary’s at this point with Trevor McCormick forcing a flying save from the Red Star goalie while Cathal McGarrity netted his first following an O’Reilly cut back on twenty minutes.

Midfield maestro McCormick thundered home goal number five into the roof of the Red Star net just before McGarrity netted his second with O’Reilly supplying the pass.

Red Star replied with probably the best goal of the game and the unfortunate McCormick nudged the ball beyond McGinnity to further reduce the deficit. But McGarrity capped a terrific St Mary’s first half netting again following O’Reilly’s pull back.

As the second half re-started, McGarrity returned the favour to supply O’Reilly with his fourth goal of the game. Cormac Morgan headed a chance over the top and volleyed another wide in between fullback Oisin Donaghy blasting a dipping right footer into the roof of the net.

Good play from Quinn and Aidan Begley resulted in Cormac Morgan firing home number ten. Jack Parke tried desperately to get his name on the score sheet but missed a sitter from eight yards out before skipper Oliver Breen showed the way netting St Mary’s final goal.

St Mary’s lost a bit of their shape in the final which resulted in Red Star pulling a further two goals back before the final whistle.
