A valiant performance from Social II’s wasn’t enough to take anything from an entertaining clash against table toppers Little Common as two superb free kicks and a soft penalty gave Common their first three goals.
Despite falling behind to one of those brilliant free kicks early in the first half it was Social who created the better chances for the remainder of the first period and scored a well deserved equaliser 30 minutes in after excellent work in midfield from Carlton Phillips and Adam McDougall sent Amani ‘Tods’ Geenus-Williams clear to fire home. Another excellent outside of the foot pass from McDougall sent Kenny Butchers scampering away down the left shortly afterwards and Butchers centre found an unmarked Geenus-Williams in the 6 yard box but he unfortunately couldn’t sort his feet out quickly enough and the chance went a begging.
Social began to find more space in midfield areas and James Glavin, Phillips and McDougall were unfortunate not to create further goals with some brilliant passes. With moments remaining at the end of the half Marlon Gillett was harshly judged to have brought down the Common winger and they converted the resultant penalty to go into the half with a fortunate lead.
Although Common were dominating the possession stats the back five of Gillett, Connor Earl, JJ Blanche, Justin Jirbandey and Butchers and the solid protection Damian March offered them from midfield limited Common to speculative efforts from range. Substitute Kenny McNaughton was creating problems down the right flank and very nearly created a goal for fellow substitute McDougall after a brilliant solo run. However another expertly struck Common free kick midway through the second half was added to by a late scrappy goal to give Common the points.
