Match Report – 1st Team V Hawkhurst United - Saturday 5th January.
The first team secured 3 points yesterday afternoon kicking off 2019 in the best way possible as they overcame visitors Hawkhurst United. Having fallen short against Hawkhurst earlier in the season, this added a little bit of spice to the return fixture.
Whilst Rangers were mainly in control early on, it took 33 minutes before the deadlock was broken. After some sustained pressure, the ball fell to 16-year-old Harvey Monk who slotted home from close range. The home side continued to push until the break, but were unable to add to the scoreline. HT Sedlescombe 1-0 Hawkhurst.
With all still to play for and neither side in complete control, both teams approached the 2nd half with a higher tempo. Hawkhurst managed to find an equaliser on 55 minutes, which Rangers replied to on 61 minutes via Pip Hatch. Dom Bristow played the ball into Hatch who took it on the half turn and slotted the ball into the bottom corner. 2-1 Rangers!
With 2-1 always being a precarious scoreline, the final 20 minutes saw some better football played by the visitors as they tried again to pull themselves level. Sedlescombe looked the fitter side and stamina would always play a part in a game straight after the festive break! After tirelessly running for the majority of the match, Luke Davies deservedly found the third on 82 minutes to add some daylight between the 2 teams. With only a minute to go, Pip Hatch secured his second of the afternoon and Rangers fourth. Full time Sedlescombe Rangers 4-1 Hawkhurst United. The LCS Roofing and Cladding man of the match was midfielder Luke Davies.
3 points and plenty of chances being created is encouraging as the first team go into a county cup quarter final next weekend. Rangers have been drawn against local side Hollington United with kick off set to 1.30pm at the Gibbons Memorial Field. Hollington are currently flying high in the Mid-Sussex Premier Division after their promotion from the East Sussex Premier Division last season. One thing this fixture will guarantee is a well battled cup tie as both teams will be desperate to progress into the semi-finals.
