Match Report - 1st Team AWAY V Battle Baptist 01/09/2018
The East Sussex Football League kicked off last weekend, with the 1st team opening their account away at last seasons Premier Division runners up Battle Baptist.
The first half was an eventful 45 minutes with the scoreline 3-3 at half time. A sharp opening 20 minutes saw Sedlescombe take the lead with goals from Tom Cusden and Pip Hatch. Battle had then brought this back to 2-2 only for Micheal Booth to put the visitors in front again. This was short lived with Battle equalizing just before the midway point.
The second half was well contested by both teams. Chances at each end kept both goalkeepers alert, but neither team could capitalize on this to put themselves in front. Unfortunately for Sedlescombe , with 8 minutes to go, a deep Battle corner to the far post was met by a rising Baptist defender who headed home from close range. Sedlescombe pushed hard in the remaining moments, but couldn't find another goal to salvage any points from the game. An afternoon of mixed emotions having started so brightly, but coming away with nothing on the opening day. Sedlescombes man of the match was U18 Ben Gardner, a product of the clubs youth system who looks set to have a successful season within the senior teams.
In other results, the 2nd team drew 2-2 with Battle Baptist II in a game they were unlucky not to win, with the 3rds beating Battle Baptist III 6-2 at Bexhill Road. Positive starts for both teams who are in new divisions this year after achieving promotion from Div 3 and 5 respectively.
