Salcombe clinched their first three premier division points with what was , in the end , a comfortable victory over their Newton Abbot based opponents.
With a number of last weekends team either injured or unavailable manager Nick Bonnet gave starts to new signing Shaun Rowe plus George Dodge, Louie Martin, Fred Massey and Ryan Colmer. Despite the changes Town started well , playing some good passing football with Ash Yeoman in particular causing the 66 defence problems . Unsurprisingly it was Yeoman who opened the scoring with a shot off the post after being played in by a good ball from Massey. With Salcombe well on top and restricting Newton to long range efforts it seemed only a matter of time before they increased their tally however despite Yeoman and Martin looking odds on to score in a goalmouth scramble and Colmer forcing a fine save from the goalkeeper half time came with no change to the score.
Going into the second half Town were aware they only had to keep things tight at the back and further chances would come at the other end. In the event it took only five minutes of the second half for Salcombe to double their lead with Will Giffen turning in a corner at the near post. Five minutes later it was three with man of the match Ben Tapper scoring a fine volley from the edge of the penalty area. With the game effectively over and 66 looking demoralised it seemed likely that Town would go on to score more ,although it was Newton who had the last word scrambling in a consolation goal after a clear foul on Kieran Stallard was missed by the referee. With 66 having a late burst of enthusiasm Ziggy Tapper in the Town goal had to go full length to turn away a long range effort, however it was too little too late as a Salcombe were able to see out the game to claim a deserved three points.
This week Town are in action in the Devon Premier Cup once again facing Newton 66 this time at Malborough in an earlier 2.15 kick off. Once again all support would be very welcome.
