vs Welwyn Warriors

Home league match

It was a frustrating Sunday morning for the 1st team as they looked to extend their 4 game unbeaten run, but it was not to be the case.

As the game began, Royston started fairly well as they soaked up the pressure from Welwyn Warriors winning the ball back and looking a threat on the counter attack.

Unfortunately for Royston, Welwyn Warriors were awarded a penalty and the lads were adamant that the initial contact took place on the edge of the box but the decision still went against them. The spot kick was converted as the ball was slotted into the bottom corner.

Royston still searched for the equaliser and found it on the stroke of halftime thanks to the clinical Karl Mcgroary. The ball fell to him kindly at the back post, he got the ball out of his feet and placed his curling effort beyond the reach of the Welwyn Warriors goalkeeper. The second half got underway and the lads found themselves 2-1 down early from the restart. The Welwyn Warriors forward got beyond the defence and to the byline, cutting his low cross back to the Welwyn Warriors forward who was the goalscorer of the penalty. He found space well and fired his effort into the bottom corner once again.

Not long after Royston conceded again, the scorer of the first two goals got a hat trick as he yet again got beyond the defence and drilled his effort at the near post which overpowered Harvey Johnson who did have a fine game.

There was a glimmer of hope as Royston forward Elliot Spokes pulled a goal back. Centre half Kevin Donovan played a ball forward, but it was only half dealt with by the Welwyn Warriors centre back as his loose touch was pounced upon by Elliot who took his finish well too.

But it appears our luck had evaded us on St.Patricks day, as Welwyn Warriors added a fourth goal. Royston conceded from a corner as the hat trick hero got his fourth goal with a towering header.

It was a spirited performance from the boys, but couldn't quite get the result they were looking for. Credit to Welwyn Warriors for their performance as well.
